At Hunter, we have been working hard to expand our reputation as being more than just "the rotor company." Not that we’ve given up making the products that have made us the worldwide success and that set the performance standards for the industry. That’s still the case.

A prime example is our collection of controllers. A trio of products designed to handle the wide and varied requirements that differ from site to site, contractor to contractor. You’ve got a problem? We’ve got a controller that solves it.

"I Have to Stock Too Many Kinds of Controllers"

Not any more. Simply put, with either the Hunter ICC or Pro-C, you’ll always have the right controller for the job. The reason? Modularity.

Hunter first introduced the concept of "personalized construction" with the ICC controller, where you can customize the number of stations to better handle the specific needs of an individual landscape. Using modules, consisting of four or eight stations each, you can build a controller up to the total number of stations you need. That’s a winning solution for both you and the property owner.

The success of the ICC led to the introduction this year of the Pro-C controller, which also features modules. This latest addition to the controller line-up is designed specifically to handle smaller residential and light commercial sites. The Pro-C is available in indoor and outdoor 3-station base units, with 3-station modules that can expand the units up to 12 stations.

Modular Controllers = Less Inventory Needed

For the contractor, modules make inventory control easy. "We no longer need to keep controllers of all different sizes in stock," said John Feigal of Green Acres Sprinkler Co. in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. "We used to maintain a collection of 9-, 12- and 16-station units on hand, because we never knew exactly what size and how many controllers we might need for upcoming jobs. You just don’t want to deal with an inventory hassle like that.

"With the Pro-C and ICC, however, all we need to do is stock base units and modules and we’re covered for any landscape, commercial or residential. Now, inventory is a breeze."

And there’s yet another plus to modularity. Customers have the option of adding on to their irrigation system in the future without having to replace their controller. You can simply plug in an additional module and they’re set.

"I Need Something to Handle Power Outages"

The solution is non-volatile memory. The Hunter ICC and Pro-C controllers both include this feature, which retains program data during power outages without the need for a battery. In areas that are prone to lightning, such as Florida and the Midwest, having a controller that offers non-volatile memory is a real plus.

"Using the Hunter Pro-C has helped us to greatly reduce customer callbacks," said Joe Robbins of Greenblades of Central Florida in Umatilla. "With thunderstorms occurring here almost daily during the summer months, the potential for service calls to reprogram controllers that lose power is tremendous. If it wasn’t for the Pro-C and its non-volatile memory, we would probably spend the whole day just resetting clocks and we’d never accomplish anything else."

"I Want Simple Operation"

All Hunter controllers offer Hunter’s One Touch Start and Rapid Manual Advance. This feature makes the controller more user-friendly, requiring fewer steps to activate stations.

"It’s been great for our staff when we need to send someone to a site to quickly go through a system," said Frantz Lipsey of Hydro Irrigation Systems in Douglasville, Georgia. "Whether we need to simply scroll through stations to inspect them or to run a quick cycle if a little extra watering is needed, it’s a nice feature to have."

The One Touch Start and Rapid Manual Advance can also help out the homeowner so they can easily turn on one zone.

Both the Pro-C and ICC automatically skip shorted stations allowing the rest of the system to operate as normal. The self-diagnostic, electronic short circuit protection system is very beneficial to the user because of its ability to aid in identifying field wiring problems. It is almost as if the controller can troubleshoot the system itself.

The self-diagnostic system detects a high current path – a "short" – through an operating station (the most common causes of shorts are faulty solenoids or when a bare valve common wire touches a bare station control wire). When a short circuit is detected on a station, instead of blowing a fuse which would shut down the entire irrigation system, the controller will skip over that station and continue to water the rest of the zones in the program during every watering until the zone is repaired.

From a contractor’s standpoint, what could be more appealing than the fact that all three Hunter controllers look alike and program in the same way. It’s no accident that there is a similarity between the ICC, Pro-C and the SRC. They have been designed as part of a uniform family.

"I can send any member from any one of my crews out to a site and I can be confident that they will be able to handle the controller installed there," said Tom Lee of Indianapolis Irrigation in Indiana. "The programming functions of every Hunter controller are the same, so it isn’t necessary to learn a different way to operate every different controller. If you can operate an SRC, you can operate an ICC. Sure, there are more features on the bigger controllers, but the basic way that they operate is consistent."

"My Customers Want Something That’s Easy to Use"

A great way to impress a potential customer is by bringing the Pro-C to your sales presentation. Thanks to the unit’s removable face plate (a detachable hinge design allows quick removal of the front panel without disturbing field wiring), they’ll be able to experience desktop programming in their own hands.

"We hand our customers the face plate during our sales presentation and show them just how easy using their controller is going to be," said Michael Dunn of Norfolk Irrigation in Norfolk, Virgina. "When their controller is actually installed, they are already familiar with how it works and are ready to go."

With the use of a 9-volt battery, a contractor can set the program while away from the cabinet location. This timesaving feature allows you to program before going out to the job and also serves as a great demo when making your sales calls.

If your customer wants the ultimate in simplicity, nothing can beat the SRC. For those who have less money to spend, but still want a controller with a proven track record of Hunter quality and reliability, the SRC offers the best value around. "How Can We Increase Our Profit Margin?"

How can a contractor make the already easy-to-use trio of Hunter controllers even easier to use? By including a Hunter remote control. All three Hunter controllers can use Hunter remotes, including the SRR (for short distance needs) and the new ICR (for long-distance operation).

"Having a remote available is an easy sell-up for me that produces a ‘win-win’ situation," said Ray Eissens of Evergreen Irrigation in Rockford, Illinois. "The customer gets something useful and he has a little gadget that he can show off to his friends as he raves about his new system. It also gets us a little more profit from each job."
